The First Anniversary of the Outbreak of the War

A service was held in the parish church to mark the anniversary of outbreak of the war. The Surrey Advertiser reported ‘Wednesday evening being the first anniversary of the war a special united service was held in the parish church. The vicar [sic] (the Rev. A.J. Hamlyn) conducted the service and gave an address. The Volunteer Training Corps, the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides attended.’

War Savings

The public were urged to invest their savings in War Loans. In Ewhurst deposits could be made at the Capital and Counties Bank (Mount Cottage, near the church). The Surrey Advertiser reported on 7th August that a meeting had been held in the Church Hall -

 “WAR LOAN MEETING – On Friday evening last week a meeting was held in the church hall in connection with the Guildford Division War Savings Committee, Mr A.H. Heath presiding. Mr Courtney Welch outlined the scheme and a committee was appointed consisting of the following: the Rev. A.J. Hamlyn, Mr A.H. Heath, and Mr G Woodward. The Capital and Counties Bank have lent their branch office for the reception of deposits. The first night for receiving deposits will be Monday next between 7 and 8 o’clock.”

News from the Front

The Surrey Advertiser carried news that Lt Frecheville had been injured. William Frecheville, son of Professor William Frecheville of High Wykehurst, had been wounded on the 9th August at Hooge Chateau near Ypres. The wound, caused by shrapnel in his thigh was classified as severe and he was evacuated to England.

A war time wedding

On 21st August The Surrey Advertiser reported the marriage ‘by special license at Guildford on Saturday. Corpl. John Henry Hamshere R.E. youngest son of Mr and Mrs Hamshere of The Lawns, Baynards was married to Miss Caroline Daisy, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Girling of South Lodge Guildford.’
